The seat belt surround takes the load of the belt guide every time the car is used, and the plastic around the slot slowly wears and then splits. Once the surround is loose the belt rattles against the trim on every drive.
The reproduction keeps the factory slot geometry so the webbing feeds cleanly, with a reinforced section around the mounting boss where originals fail.
Why the original is unavailable
No longer available new from BMW; used examples are generally worn at the belt slot, which is exactly the area that matters.
Material and finish
Impact-resistant engineering polymer with a grained finish, specified for a part that is handled and loaded rather than purely decorative.
