BMW E31 shifter surround cracks and lifts at the console

The trim around the automatic shift gate splits, lifts at a corner and rattles — the panel has shrunk and its mounting tabs have broken away.

The E31 automatic shifter surround is a single large moulding that has to hold its shape around a big opening while sitting directly under the cabin greenhouse. It sees more UV and more heat than almost any other interior panel in the car.

Over three decades the panel shrinks slightly and its mounting tabs embrittle. The stress concentrates at the corners of the gate opening, which is where the cracks appear, and the surround stops sitting flat. Once one tab has snapped the panel flexes each time it is touched, and the remaining tabs follow quickly.

MMG reproduces the surround for the common drivetrain and market variants, plus the shift indicator that sits inside it. Confirm which variant your car uses before ordering — the LHD/RHD, US and Steptronic surrounds are not interchangeable.

What causes it

Why the part fails.

  • UV and heat exposure

    Direct sunlight through the glasshouse degrades the surface and the material beneath it, so the panel loses flexibility exactly where it needs to flex over the gate.

  • Stress concentration at the gate corners

    The opening leaves a narrow section at each corner. Once the material is brittle, ordinary use is enough to start a crack there.

  • Broken mounting tabs

    Tabs snap during earlier console work and are often not noticed. The panel then rests rather than clips, and every subsequent movement widens the existing cracks.

    Identify your surround variant

    Note whether the car is LHD or RHD, a US-market car, or a Steptronic model. The gate graphic and the surround geometry differ between them, and the wrong variant will not sit correctly.

  2. 02

    Move the shifter for access

    With the ignition on and the brake applied, move the selector to a position that clears the trim edge, then switch off. This avoids levering the panel against the selector.

  3. 03

    Release the surround

    Work a plastic tool around the perimeter and lift the panel evenly rather than at one corner. Aged tabs release with very little travel; forcing one corner is what breaks the rest.

  4. 04

    Disconnect the indicator and lighting

    Unplug the transmission shift indicator and any illumination before lifting the panel clear. Inspect the indicator now — a yellowed or cracked one is worth replacing while the console is open.

  5. 05

    Clean the console landing area

    Remove old tab fragments and any previous adhesive so the new surround seats on the original mounting points rather than on debris.

  6. 06

    Fit the replacement and check the gate

    Reconnect the indicator, locate the panel over the gate first, then press the clips home in sequence. Run the selector through every position and confirm nothing fouls the surround before final seating.

Before you order

  • Early (pre-1995) and late E31 cars use different switch and selector arrangements, so confirm your variant from the gate itself rather than the model year alone.
  • Keep the broken original until the replacement is fitted — the fragments confirm tab positions if anything needs checking.
  • If the console panel around the surround is also cracked, mention it in a custom request so both parts can be produced together.

Are BMW E31 shifter surrounds still available new?
The automatic shifter surround is discontinued and used examples usually carry the same corner cracking. MMG reproduces the surround for LHD/RHD, US and Steptronic variants on demand.
Can a cracked surround be repaired instead of replaced?
Cracks at the gate corners run through a highly stressed section, and a repaired panel typically fails again at the same place. Broken mounting tabs cannot be rebuilt reliably at all.
How do I know whether my car is Steptronic?
Steptronic cars have a manual-shift gate alongside the main selector path. If your gate has that second channel, use the Steptronic surround.
