Steptronic E31s use a different console aperture to the standard automatic cars, and the correct surround is far harder to find because fewer cars were built with the gearbox. Owners frequently buy the standard part by mistake and discover the gate window does not line up.
This version is dimensioned specifically from a Steptronic original, so the manual-gate window, surround depth and clip lands are correct for the car it is listed against.
Why the original is unavailable
Steptronic-specific console trim was a low-volume part even when new, and BMW no longer supplies it — remaining used examples usually carry the same cracking around the gate window.
Material and finish
Heat-stable engineering polymer with a grained finish, chosen because the surround sits in direct sun through the E31’s shallow rear glass and heats considerably in a closed car.
